Our Story

Hugh Hoagland had a vision to save lives and transform the electrical industry. In 1997, he founded ArcWear, a company dedicated to testing and rating personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect electrical workers from arc flash incidents. Hugh’s relentless efforts and expertise gained recognition worldwide, and his advocacy for arc-rated PPE became a cornerstone in advancing workplace safety across the electrical industry.

In 2004, Hugh partnered with Bill Shinn, a recently retired electrical engineer from Alcoa, where Bill had chaired the global electrical safety committee and developed the company’s first electrical safety standard. The two traveled to Kansas City, where Hugh had been invited to present on electrical safety for a major utility company. Hugh focused on arc flash and PPE, while Bill addressed other electrical hazards. The success of their training led them to co-found e-Hazard.

Today, the e-Hazard team provides comprehensive electrical safety training for the commercial, industrial, and utility sectors. Over 100,000 students have participated in e-Hazard courses, and the success of the program inspired the creation of the Train the Trainer Program, which has empowered more than 1,000 trainers to continue promoting electrical safety within their own companies.

As demand for e-Hazard’s training programs grew, so did the need for additional services. In 2008, the company expanded by bringing on more electrical engineers to meet the increasing need for arc flash studies, audits, and customized electrical safety programs.

The e-Hazard team is made up of experts in electrical engineering, adult education, and electrical safety. They contribute to the development of industry standards and guidelines, setting the benchmark for electrical safety nationwide.

At e-Hazard, we are committed to delivering top-tier services and building lasting relationships with our clients, all while staying true to Hugh and Bill’s original vision: protecting workers in the electrical industry, so that they can go home safely each night.
