811 Day – Remember to Call Before You Dig
The 811 Logo is a registered trademark of the Common Ground Alliance.

August 11 is 811 Day.

811 Day is the chosen date to promote and remind contractors and homeowners to always call 811 before digging.

The Common Ground Alliance (CGA) works “to reduce damages to the underground infrastructure—ensuring public safety, environmental protection, and the integrity of services by promoting effective damage prevention practices.”

CGA stakeholders have celebrated 8/11 Day on Aug. 11 since 2009.

Why Call?

Every nine minutes someone damages an underground utility line because no one called 811 before digging.

Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages.

The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons: erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces. Utility lines need to be properly marked. Even when digging only a few inches, the risk of striking an underground utility line still exists.

Know the Number to Call

The “Choose Your State” map on www.call811.com allows users to choose the state or province where they live or work. Each page provides additional details on each 811 center as well as specific guidelines for the specific state or province chosen.

Always remember to call before you dig!
