Kevin Holm, part of e-Hazard training in Canada, spoke at Saudi Arabia’s 4th Electrical Safety Experts Symposium this week.
The symposium is held for leaders in the kingdom to share information on safety facts and learn new and better ways to improve electrical safety. According to statistics in the symposium brochure, “fire accidents due to electrocution” were 38% of the total number of 51,781 fire accidents in the kingdom, over what looks to be several years. Leaders are working toward developing safety standards to protect workers and clients in high occupancy buildings and facilities, such as health, education and entertainment locations.
Speaker’s Notes
Kevin presented a paper he and two colleagues (Andrew Olsen and Jennifer Martin) wrote: Integrated Safety Management (ISM) & Risk Management A Complementary Pairing. The thrust of the paper is to show that incorporating the 2015 NFPA 70E® Risk Assessment Approach for Electrical Hazards into the proven Integrated Safety Management Model can establish a safe work environment. ISM is the U.S. Department of Energy‘s “corporate approach for efficiently achieving its mission goals while maintaining the highest standard of safe operations.” The DOE has been using the ISM model for over 15 years.
Kevin wrote: “Being at the symposium is an amazing cultural experience. All of the people that I have met here are amazing and are treating me great! It is great to see Saudi Arabia engaged in electrical safety by putting on this amazing event and inviting so many different experts to speak.”
